While a significant body of work has addressed fragility modeling of bridge infrastructure, many of the fragility curves presented in the literature are bridge-specific and are not applicable to regional risk assessment. It is necessary to have fragility curves applicable to a portfolio of bridges to facilitate regional risk assessment. One strategy that has been adopted to address this challenge is to group bridges for fragility assessment by subjective identification of bridge classes. Such grouping leads to a number of subclasses with unwarranted grouping. A new grouping methodology based on analysis of variance is suggested in this paper. The proposed performance based grouping approach helps to identify important bridge attributes and to create distinct bridge classes. The effectiveness of proposed approach is demonstrated in this paper through the case study of box-girder bridges at California. The proposed grouping methodology helps to reduce bridge sub-classes from all possible sub-class combinations.
