Laboratory program was conducted on tests o full scale reinforced concrete columns retrofitted with new techniques after severe damage suffered. CFRP sheets and anchors were used for strengthening or for creating ductile elements or adding new shear reinforcement as a jacket for columns. Mechanical splices were used to provide continuity to the reinforcement, and to replace buckled bars in location where concrete has crushed and the bars buckled. It was found that performance of the retrofitted column hinges was comparable to those using conventional techniques and the feasibility depends on the degree of damage, the cost of replacement, and performance required. The mechanical splices developed a well behavior under the axial load and moments effects by lateral cycle loadings applied to the columns. The CFRP materials confining the hinge region of the column provided large ductility to this member. This CFRP sheets and anchors allowed carrying out higher shear loads than the original column and wall tested. The performance in shear capacity and ductility of the rehabilitated column hinges using the innovative procedure were compared with other alternative techniques of retrofit, remarking the effectiveness of the innovative rehabilitation approaches.
