Recent research on the use of 3D strong motion acceleration and 3D gyroscope measurements has shown that sufficiently reliable rotations can be obtained along the height of a structure. By fitting a polynomial through these rotation values, the deformed shape of a structure can be estimated. The model for deformation estimates is compared to direct displacement measurements of simulations and laboratory experiment. The results show very good comparison between the estimated and measurement displacements. Correlation of these displacements to rapid warnings of green, yellow and red levels of risk can be very important in emergency response, especially when there is a high likelihood of collapse.
