Effective Parameter Set for Site Amplification Factors: S-Wave Impedance V.S. Vs30

Abstract eng:
Simplified regression models to predict the site amplification are widely adopted to seismic hazard maps, building codes, etc. In practice, the most popular parameters to control the prediction models are an averaged Swave velocity of top z m depth, V Sz , especially V S30 . S-wave impedance ratio of the uppermost layer to the basement, Z 1 /Z 0 , is alternative candidate for the prediction parameters. We compare the prediction performances for site amplification factors between V Sz and Z 1 /Z 0 , on the basis of the numerical experiments. Depth z taking the average of S-wave velocity must be selected on the basis of the target period range of site amplification factors. Z 1 /Z 0 is similar performance to V S10 , and better than V S30 for PGA amplification. This implies that Z 1 /Z 0 is effective on the usage of site amplification predictions because Z 1 only requires the physical parameter on the uppermost surface layer.
