A NEW APPROACH FOR PRACTICAL TIME INTEGRATION ANALYSIS

Abstract eng:
The most versatile and simply applicable tool for transient analysis of structural systems is time integration. The sizes of integration steps, mostly equal throughout the analysis, define the main algorithmic parameter with major roles in the accuracy and computational cost, and are to be set at the start of the analyses. Comments exist for selection of integration step size, in textbooks as well as seismic codes, e.g. the seismic code of New Zealand. Ambiguities specifically on the nonlinear version of the most conventional comment are recently addressed in the literature. With the plan to resolve these ambiguities, after reviewing the origin and essentiality of the integration step size selection comment, implementation of the comments is replaced with some additional analyses that considering the analyses essential for errors control, may cause no additional computational cost. In brief, a new approach for time integration analysis towards responses with desired accuracy is proposed, that does not need any comment for integration step size selection in the start of the analysis. With no change in the integration schemes, implementation of the approach enhances the reliability and simplicity of the analyses (compared to traditional analyses), without necessarily more computational cost.
