SEISMIC FRAGILITY ASSESSMENT OF A LOW-RISE RC FRAME CONSIDERING VERTICAL GROUND MOTION

Abstract eng:
The paper presents the seismic fragility curves and surface for a low-rise RC building taking into account the effect of vertical ground motion. Several ground motion intensity measures including peak ground acceleration, peak ground velocity, velocity spectrum intensity and spectral accelerations at one or two horizontal and vertical modes are examined to account for the combined effect of horizontal and vertical components of earthquake motion on the structure. In addition to a story drift, the axial force variation of RC column, which is mainly influenced by vertical ground motion, is considered for the engineering demand parameter. Analytical results indicate that the effect of vertical ground motion on the failure probability of the global response of the RC frame is minimal, while the inclusion of the vertical component of ground motion significantly affected fragilities of RC column.
