SEISMIC DESIGN OF RLG TANKS IN THE CONTEXT OF EUROCODE

Abstract eng:
Tanks for refrigerated liquefied gases (RLG) in chemical, petrochemical and LNG plants contain large amounts of hazardous product. The safe design of these structures in case of seismic events is essential for the safety of the plant, the environment and population. The first part of this presentation addresses the possible effects for tanks built on soft soils and special deep foundations, the resulting global behavior of the tank and the implications on the response of the liquid filled metallic inner tank. In the second part of this presentation design methods of the metallic inner tank of RLG tanks are addressed and illustrated based on a representative structure. The limit state concept according relevant parts of the EUROCODE is incorporated in the presentation. Possible failure mechanisms of metallic tanks from a practitioner’s point of view are addressed – namely rupture and buckling. From the practitioner’s point of view possible uncertainties within the regulations and typical fall traps are addressed which have an impact on design activities and overall project demands.
