Current building inventory for the city compiled by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality through street surveys (IMM-2008) contains about 1.2 million buildings. Nearly 180,000 of them are reinforced concrete (RC) frame type structures with 5 or more floors constructed after the year 2000, which can be assumed to be designed in accordance with the provisions of Turkish Earthquake Resistant Design Code (1998/2007). Spectral capacity based damage assessment methodology is utilized for the estimation of damage to these buildings. Regarding the ground motion input, we rely on the mean ground motion values (i.e. 5%-damped spectral accelerations at 0.2s and 1s) for 475 years return period computed by Sesetyan et al. (2016) based on an area source zone model for Turkey. As per the structural capacity and fragility functions we adopt the ones for code complying RC frames proposed in Hancilar and Cakti (2015). Damage assessment for the same level of ground motion is repeated with alternative capacity and fragility functions: i) High-code seismic design level structural capacity and fragility functions for RC frame building typologies of HAZUSMH MR4 (2004); and ii) Expert judgment based capacity and fragility functions for post-2000 buildings as of the study of Probable Earthquake Losses for Istanbul (IMM-2009). The results for three cases are compared in terms of number of damaged buildings and monetary losses.
