SITE SPECIFIC DYNAMICS OF STRUCTURES: FROM SEISMIC SOURCE TO THE SAFETY OF OCCUPANTS AND CONTENT

Presented is an integrated approach to modeling and simulation of seismic response of soil structure systems that starts at the earthquake source and ends up with estimates of safety for occupants and content. Primary interest is in development of modeling and simulation that removes as much as possible the (negative) influence of modeling uncertainty on obtained results. Site specific seismic motions are developed through regional geophysical models. Knowledge of shallow and deep geology as well as local topography in (some) detail is beneficial. Modeling of seismic motions from source through rock path and through soil site is currently performed deterministically in 3D and 1D and probabilistically in 1D. Significant effort is underway to develop 3D motions using full probabilistic approach. At a local, soil-structure scale, seismic motions developed from regional scale models are used to develop Domain Reduction Method forces for input into Earthquake Soil Structure Interaction (ESSI) models. Proper modeling of both body and surface waves can explain a number of commonly observed seismic motion and soil-structure interaction phenomena. In addition, inelastic modeling of soils/rock, contacts, and structural components further enhances the veracity of results. Local, ESSI scale modeling can be performed either deterministically or probabilistically. Current approaches are mainly deterministic, however, significant development and education efforts are underway to extend probabilistic (uncertain material and loads) modeling approaches. A number of deterministic and probabilistic methods and developments will be presented that are used for high fidelity modeling of the ESSI problem. Examples will be used to illustrate above developments.
