Challenges and opportunities in Heritage management in Langa: Cape Town’s oldest formal (Black) Township

Abstract eng:
In a country with massive economic and social problems, heritage resources management cannot feature highly in governmental priorities. Within the organizations responsible for heritage management in South Africa there is recognition of the potential of heritage for sustainable economic development. This paper looks at current initiatives in heritage tourism in the face of severe housing and basic living challenges in Cape Town’s oldest surviving Black township. With overcrowding and a lack of space there is significant pressure to demolish the failing hostels and to rebuild new flats at a higher density. The City of Cape Town is working towards a balance between the much needed housing and the development of long term sustainable income generation through heritage tourism. Often appearing to be mutually exclusive, these two competing needs present a variety of creative options in trying to achieve what is finally a shared goal – the economic growth of Langa.
