The preservation of it is an important concern that has to be analysed and assessed in order to preserve the unique history and the culture of each community. Therefore, the objective of this work is to evaluate the permanence, the loss or the change in the use of heritage patrimony constructed in the Historic Center of Ensenada in the state of Baja California. Ensenada encompasses a coastal city with a large port, located in the northwest of Mexico; geographically speaking is the city furthest from the country capital, Mexico City, nonetheless is located very close to the border with the United States of America. Ensenada was founded in the XIX century and had a great impulse of growth in its first decades, which was backed by the erection of buildings and dwellings made of wood imported from the United States of America. Firstly, the text presents a quantitative evaluation of the existing heritage architecture. Later, a comparison between the existing heritage patrimony and the one registered in the National Catalogue of Historic Monuments and Dwellings of Baja California elaborated in 1986. Furthermore the historic implications related to the cultural identity in the border (Mexico/USA) and their reflexion on the architecture are identified, bearing in mind that this triggered the appropriation and execution of a “different” architectonic language. Lastly, it is concluded that the cultural heritage is at risk and is urgent to protect it in order to preserve the values that it provides.
