The Austrian initiative is based on voluntary commitments and characterized by a high degree of engagement, motivation and networking of stakeholders. Due to the decrease of traditional farming, migration, and the introduction of modern harvesting techniques artefacts are increasingly endangered. Thus, walls ditches, tombs and ancient roads can be damaged or completely destroyed. Vice versa sustainable forest management strategies taking into account the four pillars of sustainability are an appropriate way to protect these objects. Therefore forest owners as well as forest workers bear a high degree of responsibility. The initiative presented in this paper addresses efforts to raise awareness of forest owners and managers by adequate publications and non-formal specific education concerning the identification and safeguarding of the cultural heritage in and of the forest.
