Assessment of structural stone columns using non-destructive techniques of ultrasound and thermal measurements in a 18th century Spanish Cloister

Abstract eng:
The building under study is the Convento de la Caridad, which dates back to 1757, situated in the town of Arcos de la Frontera (Cádiz, Spain). This communication presents the results of the research conducted on the 12 limestone columns of the convent’s cloister. In situ tests were performed using non-destructive techniques (ultrasound and thermal tests) together with laboratory testing of samples to determine the mechanical and physical properties, and the petrographic and mineralogical characterization of the pillars. The main aim was to establish the extent of damage to the columns and causes, and draw conclusions, as well as to set guidelines for rehabilitation and maintenance work within a sustainable intervention framework.
