An adventure of sustainability: Tophane-i Amire (imperial cannon foundry)

Tophane-i Amire, which was built immediately between the years of 1453-1470, after the conquest of Istanbul, is the first cannon foundry of Ottoman era. However, its essence importance comes from being one cannon foundry until today. Building has become a complex with various repairs and articulations in the historical process. Today, Tophane-i Amire, also gives its name to the region. First, it was thought re-functionalization as a “Military Museum". Then in 1992, it was destinated to Mimar Sinan University, to be used as an Art and Culture Center. In this context, it has been given a new identity with a project carried out within the framework of inter-university cooperation between Turkey and France. In the near term, by the effect of the wind of "2010 European Capital of Culture" for the more effective use of Tophanei Amire, a project of enviromental arrangement was prepared with the goal of creating a more intense integration into the city. In the most recent period, in the next empty area of the Tophane-i Amire, a new “cultural center” was planned. Althought it was begun, it was stopped because of historical traces dated to the various era emerged during excavations. In this paper, in the scope of sustainability in architecture, transform process of Tophane-i Amire and the adventure of a cultural center, which is planned to be made next to it, is going to be submitted to your interpretation.
