Architectural heritage conservation under the influence of dominant culture - a case study of the Island of Kinmen

Abstract eng:
The largest and most complete collection of traditional MinNan (Southern Fujian) settlements and buildings, as well as the remains of important monuments from the Cold War in Kinmen are accidentally preserved in Kinmen due to its low level of development during four decades of military administration. However, since the lifting of martial law in 1992 and the implementation of the mini three-links in 2001, Kinmen has been importing materials and craftsmen from China for restoration of traditional architecture due to their substantially cheaper labour and material costs. As a result, the sophisticated local architectural style became gradually ruined and the heritage of traditional craft is threatened. This paper points out the impacts of the dominant Chinese economics and culture on the traditional architecture in Kinmen and studies the phenomenon of the serious threats to the architectural heritage preservation in the specific context of Kinmen islands.
