ASR in concrete can occur when aggregate contains reactive silica/silicate components, there is sufficient amount of alkali metals present in concrete components that are able to pass into pore solution and additionally increase its pH value, and if concrete humidity exceeds 80 %. The greatest expansion of concrete characteristically occurs when reactive silica components are present in relatively low amount known as pessimum proportion. General principles for assessing the risk of concrete expansion due to ASR are outlined together with recommended precautions for minimizing the risk.
