Železniční tunely v síti českých drah

Abstract eng:
The history of railway in the Czech Republic is quite long, dating back to 1842 when the construction of oldest tunnel started. The number of railway tunnels has reached a respectable figure of 156, plus another 11 which have been abandoned. The majority of railway tunnels were buit from the middle19th century to the middle of 20th century. Only 15 tunnels have been commissioned in the past 30 years, but 9 since 2000. The growing number of tunnel built recently implies that the importance of tunnel on railway tracks has been increasing, mainly on tracks which are being upgraded to become parts of railway transit corridors. The modernisation of railway lines to suit requirements for the corridors brought about the need for reconstruction the existing lines incl. Tunnels, because their design parameters did not meet the requirements for higher speed to reach 160 km/h.
