A Return to the Ever-Green Question of Web Tolerances: Can We Make Them Less Stringent Without Imperilling the Safety of Steel Bridges?

Abstract eng:
With the view to make steel bridge structures more competitive, it is indispensable to look for some ways such as to reduce the price of their fabrication, an important role in this striving being played by the possibility to reduce, at least to a certain extent, the costly straightening of the initial curvature of the webs of steel plated girders. For this reason an extensive (elasto-plastic large-deflection) analysis [1] of the effect of various (practically important) configurations and magnitudes of the initial "dishing" of the webs of steel plate girders on their limit state is carried out, and some conclusions in regard to the aforesaid question are drawn.
