The general philosophy of the design using test results is integrated in European normative documents; the paper deals with problems of its practical applications by presenting some particular examples of the characteristic and design resistances determination especially. In this paper some influences and their importance to the result design resistance are shown on several selected examples of various types of structural members or parts. The attention is directed to questions of the influence of (i) mechanical and geometrical quantities and their statistic parameters, (ii) realized test number and (iii) resistance model (from the viewpoint of its appositeness and mathematic function complexity) to the design resistance of structural member or component. Also possibilities of the simplification of the standard procedure for design resistance determination and its use for small test number (1, 2 or 3) are discussed.
