Some Aspects of Numerical Simulations of Thin-Walled Steel Structures

Abstract eng:
The plates of thin-walled steel structures to be in nature imperfect may exhibit out-of-plane displacements (deflections) under in-plane compressive load. Such type of structural behaviour needs to use the large-deflection theory for numerical simulations. Two series of illustrative examples present the effects of initial geometrical imperfections and boundary conditions on solution methods and strategies used. Utilizing elastic-plastic large-deflection simulation model of FE commercial code MSC.Nastran the strength study of stub columns having doubly symmetrical welded I cross-section with slender web-plate is carried out. The studied columns are chosen out of two experimental research programmes accomplished at the USTARCH Institute and at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of Technical University of Košice due to verifying the simulation models.
