000003036 520__ $$2eng$$aThe reattachment of spalling stone has been achieved by various means but traditional methods involving lime, Portland cement and synthetic adhesives all have defects that render them unsuitable for sandstone in the long term. Research into grouts fully compatible with siliceous rocks has led to the development of two materials composed entirely of silica. The first, developed in 1992 and refined for trial use in 1994, relies on the binding properties of ethyl silicate. The second, developed for application to water saturated volcanic tuff relies on the binding properties of lithium silicate.
