Lateral buckling – assessment by codes / FEM

Abstract eng:
The loss of elastic stability caused by both lateral and torsional deformations of bent beams is called lateral buckling. The most typical cases of lateral buckling of beams are covered by the Czech Code ČSN 73 1401 [1]. In the real world we often need to solve structures where the application of the Code comes short. When it happens the finite element method (FEM) is the most convenient way we can use. Standard FEM calculations result in the linear (bifurcation) stability limit, but using only this number is not enough. We want to apply the experience collected in the Code concerning geometrical and material imperfections and factors of safety. This paper at first illustrates these problems on some simple beams but also provides a solution of a real compound beam used in house construction.
