Transmission error measurements using the real time Hilbert transformer

Abstract eng:
The paper deals with the problem of angular vibration measurements. The source of information about angular vibrations is an incremental rotary encoder producing a string of impulses or another impulse generator. It is supposed that the impulse frequency is changed proportionally to the rotational frequency. The time record of an impulse signal is transformed to an analytical signal using the Hilbert transform. The approach to perform the Hilbert transform based on the FIR filter is discussed. The unwrapped phase of the analytical signal gives the rotation angle. Signals that are disturbed by noise are enhanced by filtration in the frequency domain. The measurement method described in the paper can be employed for inspection of the simple gear train transmission error as a tool for improving the design of the tooth profile and for quality control. The described signal processing method results in the time history of the transmission error during the few complete gear revolutions.
