To study this, a computational model was created which considers three possible ways of behaviour: rolling, sliding and movement without the contact of the wheel with the rail. The computations revealed the unevennesses bring oscillations into the system which for one thing significantly increase the forces in the contact and for another cause reducing the load and that leads to the sliding or even the loss of the contact. The sliding causes friction which creates heat which can lead to material changes and/or increased stress. The loss of contact leads to the impact. This proves unevennesses have very negative effect on the wheel-rail system.
