It also explains the difference between the mean time between failures (MTBF) and useful life, and shows the use of failure rate for reliability evaluation and in design. The shape parameter of Weibull distribution for times to failure is related to the bathtub curve and can indicate the basic reasons for some kinds of failures. The second part of the paper is devoted to the methods for reliability increasing, especially in design stage: Failure mode and effect analysis, Fault tree analysis, robust design, computer simulation, testing of all components before assembling, proof testing and diagnostics.
