Some specific features of the rotor dynamic behaviour

Abstract eng:
Increasing operating speed of rotating machines brings more serious problems with rotor dynamics. Rotors supported in sliding bearings exhibit in principle two kinds of instability. While “oil whip” is characteristic for elastic rotors, “oil whirl” type can be encountered first of all on rigid rotors, very often with gas bearings. Some examples of rotor instabilities together with some very specific phenomena, as e.g. subharmonic resonance of the titling-pad bearing pad presented in the paper, were encountered either in real machines or on the test rotors.
