000004303 520__ $$2eng$$aThis paper describes XML-based integrated software and database management tools developed to manage aerodynamic data for low-rise buildings, Lim et al. [1]. The purpose of this endeavor was to build an aerodynamic database with a user-friendly access available to practicing engineers and researchers. XML (eXtensible Markup Language), Williams [2], is a universal standard for conveying and describing structured information and for management of databases. Its flexibility and ability for data storage in a software-neutral text files has given rise to wide acceptance of this markup language. In addition, it can be used for long-term data archival on any operating system. In view of these attributes, the XML technology was chosen for archival and management of wind-tunnel data and supporting information to be incorporated in the aerodynamic database. The result of this effort is the development of the Wind Engineering Markup Language (WEML), which is a specialized (markup) language tailored to describe and archive generic wind engineering datasets. It involves a standardized file format (schema) used to define the structure of a WEML document. This environment has been utilized to develop distributed database structure used to manage and manipulate WEML documents, schematically depicted in Figure 1. It allows for database contributions by remote data providers, who independently archive aerodynamic datasets and maintain WEML documents at their sites.
