When vehicles are driven on freeways and bridges with high speeds in windy conditions, strong interaction between vehicles, supporting structures (pavement, bridges), and wind should be well considered. Dynamic loading from vehicles on the supporting bridges and roadways are studied with a detailed full vehicle model as well as a simple quarter vehicle model. It was found that wind plays an important role in vehicle wheel dynamic loading and vehicle comfort problems. The simple quarter vehicle model is found to be acceptable for vehicle loading analysis in most cases. Through using key mode selection techniques transplanted from bridge aerodynamic analysis, a simple bridge model with only 3 modes was built. Interaction and wheel loading analysis was conducted using a simple bridge model with 3 key modes as well a more complicated bridge model with 10 modes, respectively. Comparison between the results suggests that the key-modes based bridge model will lead to acceptable predictions as compared to those with the more complicated bridge model but with less computational efforts when wind is weak. When wind is strong, more comprehensive bridge models with some higher modes are necessary in order to accurately predict the wheel loading and vehicle dynamic performance. A numerical example with Luling Bridge was given and some observations were introduced.
