Incorporation of Structural Design for Hurricanes into Senior Design Courses of Civil Engineering Program at TAMUK

Abstract eng:
Senior design courses (CEEN 4279 and 4289) in the civil engineering (CE) curriculum at Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) are designated to prepare students to enter the workforce and immediately become productive engineers. The two senior design courses in CE have been strengthened to include hurricane engineering, since most of TAMUK CE graduates obtain employment in south Texas, a hurricane prone region. The major emphases of these two courses are on teamwork, planning and designing, innovation and creativity, drafting and reporting skills, engineering professional skills and practice. Student teams consisting of four to five members are responsible for project assignments, planning, and designing. Students conduct a synthesis of analysis prior to the completion of their design with various inputs of hurricane wind loads. Presentation to their client includes drawings as a final product of design with the details of specifications. The main objective of the assignments is to satisfy the industrial clients by making certain that their design is feasible and all elements of the projects meet the specified specifications, including minimizing hurricane hazards. The focus of this course syllabus is to provide the students with all of the basic tools and professional engineering skills needed to master their knowledge from previous courses with ability to design structural systems and minimize hurricane damages. Computer applications and oral presentations are also core components that are stressed in the senior design courses. Both courses are enriched with seminars by inviting professional engineers and industrial experts to highlight a broad range of engineering practice and skills needed for launching a successful career as a young civil engineer.
