Aerodynamic Studies for the Brazilian Wind Code

Abstract eng:
In Brazil, since 1960 until nearly the end of the century, the main scope of the studies of the static wind action on structures has been to obtain information for inclusion in the Brazilian wind code, NBR6123. Initially a few tests were carried out with a uniform, smooth air stream, then with a partial simulation of wind characteristics with the aid of a coarse grid and curved screens. Lastly, for the major part of the tests, the main characteristics of natural winds were simulated in the usual way, at the LAC (Laboratório de Aerodinâmica das Construções – Building Aerodynamic Laboratory), Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Some models were studied with both smooth uniform and shear turbulent flows, in order to demonstrate the necessity of a correct simulation of the main characteristics of natural winds. Sometimes the difference of results is impressive, as will be presented in this paper. Several types of roofs with flat surfaces were studied, including the influence of parapets, eaves and closed ventilators. Isolated and pairs of models with arched roofs, domes, isolated and neighboring tall buildings were systematically studied, as well. With respect to tall buildings, the importance of surroundings on torsional effects should also be mentioned.
