000004534 520__ $$2eng$$a Recent advances in damage detection algorithms show tremendous potential to overcome difficulties associated with visual inspection. One can observe from various algorithms proposed in a large number of research papers that such algorithms may not lead to accurate detection and localization of damage, and estimation of degree of damage. A study is presented here to compare various vibration-based outputonly damage detection techniques such as frequency domain decomposition, natural excitation technique and Random Decrement Technique each coupled with Eigen realization algorithm, Statistical Pattern Recognition Paradigm Approach and Autoregressive Model Based Method. Shake table studies are performed using a model of a 3-story steel moment frame building in structural engineering laboratory at IIT Kanpur. White noise excitation scaled to different intensity levels are used for shake table test and also two level of damage is being induced here. The study shows that a varying level of success can be achieved with different methods in identifying modal properties as well as in detecting damage in the structure, as partially presented in the following table.
