However, in many engineering problems, the non-determinism is spread out over a spatial domain, and therefore cannot be captured by a scalar parametric uncertainty. This is for instance the case for uncertainty in geometry or material properties in FE models. Specific probabilistic tools have been developed for the analysis of this type of uncertainty. This paper discusses the application of the alternative interval concept in this context. It focusses on the application of this concept for dealing with spatial uncertainty in realistically sized FE problems. Several aspects as information representation, forward uncertainty propagation and post-processing are discussed. Specific focus is on the data representation, computational efficiency and visualization requirements of the applied tools, which are illustrated using a realistic case-study.
