000004573 520__ $$2eng$$aThis paper assesses the performance of subset simulation by applying it to a simple reliability problem which involves two statistically independent random variables, i.e., x = {x<sub>1</sub>, x<sub>2</sub>}. Both x<sub>1</sub> and x<sub>2</sub> follow the normal distribution with a mean of 120 and a standard deviation of 60. The performance functions in this problem are as follows
 g<sub>1</sub>(x)=x<sub>1</sub>+80
 g<sub>2</sub>(x)=x<sub>1</sub>+x<sub>2</sub>+80
 The limit state functions in this reliability problem are shown in Figure 1.
 For the problem assessed, the performance of the subset simulation is not significantly affected by the non-linearity of the performance function when there is only one limit state function. However, its efficiency is lowered when applied to the system reliability problem. A change in the form of the limit state surface in a system reliability problem will change the intermediate failure domains and hence alter the way how the samples are generated. The efficiency of the subset simulation will be lower when the values of various performance functions are significantly different.
