ON THE ERROR CONTROL BY DAMPING IN IMPACT PROBLEMS IN GRANULAR MECHANICS

Abstract eng:
A central impact of two balls having nonlinear stiffness is investigated numerically in order to find the accumulated error as a function of the time step. The error is presented as the energy conservation violation at the moment of break up and it has an appearance of kinetic energy added to the system during the impact. A quasi-viscous nonlinear force to compensate for the increase in the latter is introduced and it is shown that by finding the proper magnitude of this force the time step can be increased almost two-fold without violating the energy and momentum conservation laws at the moment of break up. This result can be used in multi-ball collisions to increase the computational efficiency of simulations.
