FLEXIBILITY-BASED DAMAGE LOCALIZATION EMPLOYING AMBIENT VIBRATION

Abstract eng:
In recent years, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) has been emerging as a new research area for Civil Engineers. Most of the existing health monitoring methodologies require measurement of the inputs in order to be implemented. However, in many cases, there is no easy way to measure this excitation, or to excite the structures. Therefore, investigation of the ambient vibration case becomes important. In this paper, an approach is proposed to extend the DLV method to handle the ambient vibration case. A modal expansion technique is employed, while implementing this flexibility-matrix based health monitoring method. A approach to select the analytical model to do modal expansion is proposed. At the end of the paper, a numerical example, considering limited sensors and noises, is included to verify the validity of the proposed approach.
