APPLICATION OF ELASTO-PLASTIC THEORIES IN MODELING THE BEHAVIOR OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS

Abstract eng:
In this paper, the load displacement curves of reinforced concrete beams have been obtained by using elasto-plastic theories via a finite element program. Analysis of these curves will help the computation of the ultimate load capacity of beams. A finite element program has been prepared, in which the reinforced concrete is modeled in two different ways: a) By using a layered approach (including shear deformation effects) in which each layer has its own special material properties, with the reinforcement modeled as one of the layers assuming perfect bond between the concrete and the reinforcement; and b) By using a combination of separate elements for the concrete and the reinforcement which are connected at the respective nodes. The results of the models have been compared to experimental results presented by Scordelis & Bresler. The comparison shows a good correlation between the numerical and the experimental results for a substantial portion of the curves.
