LOAD – DISPLACEMENT CURVES OF SQUARE REINFORCED CONCRETE COLUMNS BASED ON FRACTURE MECHANICS

Abstract eng:
In this paper, the load–displacement behavior of reinforced concrete columns with square cross sections, with a few common longitudinal and transverse reinforcement configurations, have been studied under increasing axial load. The behavioral model assumed for concrete is an elastic – plastic – fracture model, while the failure criterion has been taken into account according to the Willam–Warnk Criterion. An elastic– perfectly plastic model has been used for the reinforcing steel. A smeared crack hypothesis has been used for the concrete cracking. A finite element program using solid cube elements for concrete, and bar elements for the reinforcement has been developed. Experimental results of "Sheikh and Uzumeri" as well as "Priestly and Park" have been used to verify the results.
