The pavement with surface cracks and reflected cracks, which is selected from Shen-Da Expressway - the first highway in China, is modeled as an inhomogeneous, laminate structure. The elastic modulus is assumed to be temperature-dependent and the temperature field to be a non-liner one. The numerical results demonstrate an interesting behavior that the maximum stress exists not in the crack tips but in the interface between damage zone and non-damage field. The theoretical prediction on the fatigue damage life indicates the results in reasonable agreement with that of the observation.
