FORMULATION OF A PATH-FOLLOWING CONSTRAINT WITH APPLICATION TO MONTE CARLO SIMULATIONS OF FAILURE IN QUASI-BRITTLE SOLIDS

Abstract eng:
A path-following constraint is developed which is based on the energy release rate. This makes it applicable to the simulation of failure of quasi-brittle materials when no previous knowledge is available on the location of the failure process zone and, consequently, indirect displacement control methods like CMOD cannot be applied. The constraint is derived from the first principle of thermodynamics for a finite element discretisation of a solid with a continuum damage model. The characteristics of the developed constraint make it especially applicable to Monte Carlo analyses of quasi-brittle solids with random defects.
