Failure mechanisms such as microstructural cracking or local yielding are better predicted by analyzing local stresses rather than by applying macro-scale average stresses. Moving-window techniques have emerged as a useful method for local characterization of random composite microstructures. In this work moving-window techniques are used to generate fields describing the elastic properties of fiber-reinforced composites. These stochastic elastic property fields exhibit distinct non-Gaussian characteristics. An iterative Fourier-based multi-dimensional non-Gaussian simulation technique is applied to generate multiple constitutive property field realizations that replicate the statistics of three original sample fields. Based on the simulated samples, statistics on the local stresses are estimated, which will provide the basis for establishing a measure of the material reliability under given loading conditions.
