MICRO-MECHANICAL DEFINITION OF STRAIN TENSOR FOR GRANULAR ASSEMBLIES

Abstract eng:
In the micro-mechanics of granular assemblies, the strain tensor has an important role as well as the stress tensor naturally. However, although some definitions of strain tensor for granular assemblies have been proposed up to the present, the definitions seem to be not sufficiently appropriate from a micromechanical viewpoint. This paper proposes a new micro-mechanical definition of strain tensor by using the Dirichlet tessellation defined for granular assemblies, and discusses some advantageous points of the proposed definition.
