First, the interactions between bridge and vehicles resulting from coupling and irregularities on the bridge surface should be accounted for; second, a good representation of bridge surface roughness is necessary; and, finally, the model of the bridge should be as realistic as possible. However, in most of the available literature on the subject, one or more of these elements is downplayed. In this paper, a Monte Carlo simulation technique is employed to study the related random vibration problem. The irregularities in the bridge surface are modeled as a stationary, zero mean Gaussian process with a specified power spectral density (PSD), from which sample functions are generated by Shinozuka’s method. To model a slab-girder bridge, a finite element formulation is used, in which the interaction dynamics between bridge and vehicles can be considered accurately. “Moving mass” and “moving oscillator” solutions are obtained. It is found that the “moving mass” simulation does not give reasonable results and that the distribution of Dynamic Amplification Factors (DAF) from the moving oscillator solution can be described well by a double log-normal probability distribution.
