By examining these equations more closely, two mechanisms of failure of the microelements are identified. Taking the plastic strains to be consequence of the failure of some of the microelements, equations are developed for plastic strains. The formulation also yields loading criterion and flow directions. The variables involved in the equations have physical meaning. Equations are incrementally nonlinear, and both loading and stress reversals give rise to plastic behavior in certain regions.
