ENTRAINMENT MODELING OF PLANE SURFACE JET IN WEAK CO-CURRENT

Abstract eng:
The entrainment characteristics of plane surface jets on the free surface of an irrotational co-current in a channel are studied experimentally and modeled analytically. The entrainment data were extracted from LDV measurements of longitudinal mean jet velocities obtained under different ambient current conditions. Two entrainment models were examined. The first model applied the entrainment coefficient α , as defined by Morton, Taylor and Turner (1956) and the second model applied the entrainment coefficient β , as defined by Townsend (1956). The results have indicated that α decreased with distance along the jet, while β was constant.
