The attention focuses on the effect of particle properties (contact friction and stiffness) and silo geometry (presence of inserts). Considering soft particles, the contact friction plays a major role on the horizontal-to-vertical stress ratio both at the end of filling and during the discharge. With stiffer particles, the effect of friction is less pronounced and a more isotropic contact force distribution is observed. The presence of inserts leads to significant arching effects during discharge. The contact friction between particles and between particles and walls facilitates this phenomenon.
