Damages to roof structures are often observed during typhoon or hurricanes. Roof lifting may be caused by a severe wind loading, or the fatigue of panels around fasteners’ hole, which is generally resulted by the small but long time vibration caused by wind. Control of the roof panel’s vibration will reduce the magnitude of vibration, reduce the fatigue phenomenon and as a result will increase the lifetime of the roof panel. Magnetorheological (MR) dampers are semi-active devices that use MR fluids to produce a controllable damping with low power requirement. They have higher reliability than other devices in that they will work in passive state should the control hardware or power supply fails. In this paper, roof panel structure is modeled by a simply supported plate. Vibration control, both passive and semi-active, of the plate under random loads by using a MR damper are investigated. Optimal feedback control method is used to reduce the vibration. Numerical simulation results show that MR damper has potentials in vibration control of roof panel. Application of MR damper to real roof structure is under investigation. 000004815 540__ $$aText je chráněný podle autorského zákona č. 121/2000 Sb. 000004815 653__ $$aRoof Structure, Vibration, Optimal Control, Magnetorheological Fluids. 000004815 7112_ $$a15th ASCE Engineering Mechanics Division Conference$$cNew York (US)$$d2002-06-02 / 2002-06-05$$gEM2002 000004815 720__ $$aLiu, Wei$$iHou, Zhikun$$iSenseny, Paul 000004815 8560_ $$ffischerc@itam.cas.cz 000004815 8564_ $$s1235403$$uhttps://invenio.itam.cas.cz/record/4815/files/375.pdf$$yOriginal version of the author's contribution as presented on CD, . 000004815 962__ $$r4594 000004815 980__ $$aPAPER
