Characteristics such as natural frequencies, modal damping and mode shapes often change very little from localized damage unless the damage is of great severity. This paper proposes using smart structures technologies, such as variable stiffness and damping devices (VSDDs) to improve this sensitivity for more accurate structural health monitoring. VSDDs are already being used to improve the performance of structures subjected to natural hazards by mitigating vibration response. In addition to providing near optimal control strategies for vibration mitigation, these low-power and fail-safe devices can also provide parametric changes to increase global vibration measurement sensitivity for health monitoring. While this approach can be used with other identification methods, it is here investigated in the context of a parametric frequency domain identification to determine structural parameters. The VSDDs are assumed to have discrete stiffness settings. Some examples from simulation are used to demonstrate the proposed method.
