MESO-SCALE CONTINUUM MODEL AND DISCRETE MODEL FOR GRANULAR MATERIALS

Abstract eng:
A novel meso-scale granular continuum model is derived by homogenising the mechanical behaviour of six particles in contact forming an octahedron structure. The elastic behaviour at the particle contacts is modelled in accordance with Hertz theory, whereas the frictional behaviour is taken into account via an evolution law for the contact shear stiffness. The meso-scale continuum model is calibrated on discrete element simulations of a cuboidal volume filled with identical spheres and loaded under axi-symmetric compression. The influence of the confining pressure on the response is considered, and the failure contour is computed in the deviatoric plane of the principal stress space.
