SOME RECENT ADVANCES AND FUTURE TRENDS IN NONLINEAR STRUCTURAL MECHANICS FOR SHIPS AND OFFSHORE STRUCTURES

Ships and offshore structures are likely to be subject to various types of actions and action effects arising from service requirements that may range from the routine to the extreme or accidental. A variety of ocean environmental phenomena include freak waves, impact pressure actions (arising from sloshing, slamming, and green water), collisions, grounding, dropped objects, fire, explosion, and to name a few. All of such ocean environmental phenomena commonly give rise to highly nonlinear structural consequences in association with geometric and material nonlinearities. While the identification of both actions and action effects is equally important in terms of structural design and strength assessment, the present paper is focused on the latter associated with nonlinear structural mechanics and analysis relating to limit states and risk assessment and management. Future trends and further R&D requirements are also addressed. The present paper does not aim for the literature survey, but it attempts to discuss some important issues relating to nonlinear structural mechanics and analysis.
