PROBABILISTIC APPROACH TO FATIGUE DAMAGE OF STEEL BRIDGE

Abstract eng:
The article presents the fatigue life estimate of a temporary, high strength steel bridge for tram traffic built in 1977 in Prague. Fatigue life assessment is now based on fully probabilistic concept represented by method SBRA (Simulation Based Reliability Assessment). Method SBRA allows to reflect wide spectrum of input random variables in connection with lifetime prediction of fatigue damage. The analysis based on fully probabilistic concept is performed using computer program Anthill™. Real loading as well as obtained response history were considered and a fatigue criterion, based on the stressrange concept, was applied. Crack growth was modelled using LEFM procedures and compared with observed critical real cracks in the bottom flanges. After about three and a half years of use the bridge had to be removed as early as 1980. The reason of short time of operation is investigated.
